Paulo Bártolo has a PhD on Mechanical Engineering from the University of Reading (UK), and an MSc and “Licenciatura” both on Mechanical Engineering from the Technical University of Lisbon (Portugal). Currently, he is Professor on Advanced Manufacturing Processes at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPL), Portugal, Director of the Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Programme Director of the MSc on Design and Product Development at IPL, Professor of the Cátedra UNESCO of Biomaterials at the University of Habana, Cuba, Associate Member of CIRP (The International Academy for Production Engineering), Coordinator of the Iberoamericane Network on “Biomanufacturing: materials, processes and simulation (BIOFAB)”, a programme funded by CYTED and International Advisory Member of the Technical Committee on Biomanufacturing of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
The Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development, he coordinates, was recently rated as “Excellent”, the highest level awarded, in the last Research Assessment made by an International Panel, appointed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. In the field of Mechanical Engineering, the Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development is one of the three Portuguese Research units with such classification.
He is also Editor-in-Chief of the “Virtual & Physical Prototyping” Journal (www.tandf.co.uk/journals/titles/17452759.asp) and member of the Editorial Board of both the Biomanufacturing Journal, Journal on Interactive Design and Manufacturing, Journal, International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems, Journal of Construction, Rapid Product Development Magazine, etc. He authored and co-authored more than 200 papers in International Journals, chapters in books and conferences, 5 books and 3 patents. He has been Guest Editor of a number of International Journals and reviewer of several other International Journals. He was invited for several keynotes all over the world.
Paulo Bártolo has been the Chair of the International Conference on Advanced Research in Virtual and Rapid Prototyping (VRAP2009, VRAP2007, VRAP 2005 and VRAP 2003) and Co-Chair of the ECOMAS Thematic Conference on Tissue Engineering. He served as a member of the Scientific Committee of 35 international conferences.
