Workshop RM:Unleashing AM trough software solutions |
“3rd WORKSHOP ON ADDITIVE
MANUFACTURING:
Unleashing AM trough software
solutions”.
AM is creating new markets for limited edition and one-of-a-kind products. Also, it is causing some
companies and individuals to rethink the way products are developed and brought
to market. What’s more, a new type of manufacturer is emerging that is not
operating from a traditional manufacturing facility. This new manufacturer is
producing custom and personalized products on demand.
The “3rd WORKSHOP ON ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING” will provide industry
experts from fields such as automotive, aerospace, oil and gas, biomedical,
construction and others an area to learn, discuss and conduct business around
additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing means a world of possibilities,
efficiencies and will have a significant impact on the widespread industrial
implementations.
The workshop is geared
to manufacturing engineers and managers, process and R&D engineers,
scientists, applications and construction engineers, and precision-parts
specialists among others. The idea is to get people out there to talk about how
the technology has been implemented and look at cross-fertilization from
industry to industry and application to application so people who may want to
get into an area feel more comfortable that the technology is more
mature.
The “3rd WORKSHOP ON ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING” organized by the
“Institut Químic de Sarrià” (IQS) and Leitat Technological Center is going to be
held in Barcelona the 21st of June 2010 following the 2009
edition (www.rmforum.org).
From the group of people managing this third edition of the workshop
would like to invite you to participate in this event as an invited
speaker.
The objectives of the meeting are:
- Assess the impact AM could have on industry and society, both
socially and economically.
- Generate a thought provoking atmosphere around the role of the real
AM applications.
- Create synergies amongst AM companies, software producers, industry
and research groups in Catalonia.
Ultimately the
objective is to have a collective dialogue around AM, enable business partnering
and project creation.

Successfull stakeholders meeting June 29nd 2010 |
|
The 8th RM (AM) Platform Stakeholders meeting on June 29th 2010 attracted over 55 attendees from all over Europe, of which over 50% was of industry.
It is needless to say that the key part of the RM Platform meeting is the networking, where unplanned discussions and matchmaking is taking place.
The official programme comprised:
- The presentation of new funding opportunities (with deadlines November and December 2010) by Claude Rieg (EU Commission) showed quite some possibilities for RM. Again, it was emphasized to also have a look in ICT and other relevant framework programmes where our technology can deliver competitive advantage in various applications.
- All four running FP7 projects Directspare, Compolight, Step-up and Impala gave a good insight in the progress and demonstrators of RM technology. It is clear that industial implementation of RM is now starting of. Some really appealing demonstrators were shown. New updates are planned for the near future.
- Also BMW (Frank Wöllecke) and EADS (Dan Johns) showed some nice examples of industrial needs which are already or will be served by RM.
- A lot of discussion was raised with the presentation of new project ideas as well as the progress reporting on standardization of ASTM and VDI by Joerg Lenz from EOS, the updated SRA by Rob Scudamore (TWI) and the questionnaire by Andrzei Grzesiak (FhG-ILT). Also in this area a lot of (mostly invisible) work is being performed successfully.
We would like to thank all attendees for their contributions (and the Commission for hosting) and will notify you on the next meetings in due time.
The presentations can be found here. (For registred users only)

Additive Manufacturing Roadmap |
|
Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing: Identifying the Future of Freeform Processing
The objective of the Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing (RAM): Identifying the Future of Freeform Processing was to develop and articulate a roadmap for research in the area of additive manufacturing for the next 10-12 years. (102 page pdf)
Industries that will drive the market over the next decade include the military, dentistry, jewelry, entertainment products (e.g., video games), collectables, home accessories, and toys.
Two whole layer AM processes have been commercialized and two others are in the works. This type of processing is not only faster, but it may offer improvements in accuracy, surface finish, simplicity, and machine reliability.

|
ASTM International Meeting in Philadelphia 13.-14.01.2009
The American Society for Materials and Testing (ASTM) has set up the Technical Committee F42 on Additive Manufacturing Technologies with the scope to promote knowledge, stimulate research and implement technology through the development of international standards.
About 60 people attended the meeting in Philadelphia, which were mainly from the US. From Europe Siemens, EOS, Arcam, BMW, Materialise and Inspire were present. The Committee, with a current membership of approximately 100, has 5 technical subcommittees: Test Methods, Processes, Materials, Design and Terminology. Everybody is welcome to give input to the standardization process, but only participating members of the ASTM (75 $ per year) are allowed to vote in upcoming decisions.
The RM Platform Europe is very interested in the coming up standards and encourages everybody with interest to join the effort. Please check http://www.astm.org/COMMIT/COMMITTEE/F42.htm

RM ASTM standardisation activities |
|
Dear RM Stakeholder,
Via our international contacts (Brent Stucker) we received the invitation for the ASTM meeting setting up standards for RM, a very urgent issue for industrial take-up of our technology!
For liaising with this activity, from the RM Platform side Martin Schaefer has already attended the previous meeting and he suggests that other industrial parties will also contribute in these meetings and discussions to be sure that a relevant standard is being developed.
Please find the relevant information below and please notify us if you will attend.
Best Regards
Frits Feenstra
