We are happy to announce that the 6th RM Platform meeting will be held June 2nd in Brussels, hosted by the European Commission.
This will be a special meeting since the new 2010 call is expected to open at July 30th (please check call texts at CORDIS).
Besides being a General Assembly meeting, we will dedicate much attention to new FP7 initiatives and new Project initiatives (Project Brokerage). Andrea Gentili will present latest news on the Factory of the Future and PPP's (Public Private Projects), whereas Claude Rieg will go into more detail on RM specific topics.
We will have 7 minute presentations of new project initiatives (please sign up!) and a possibility to present posters, as well as an update of the four running RM projects.
Last but not least we will have a good opportunity for networking and planning future cooperations.

Looking forward to meeting you all June 2nd!

5th RM Platform stakeholders meeting: a great success!

The 5th RM Platform stakeholders meeting was held September 16th 2008 in Ptuj, Slovenia, kindly organised by the Institute for Innovation and Development of University of Ljubljana. Over 95 attendees from all over Europe took the opportunity to discuss about the RM platform, EUREKA and ERA-NET and JTI.

Claude Rieg, DG-Research from the EC, addressed RM and its embedding in the Manufuture Platform. Rapid Manufacturing is well positioned within Manufuture, where Martin Schäfer is member of the High Level Group. Also the FP7 NMP programme was addressed where it became clear that the first RM fitting call would be early 2010. Needless to say that we also need to look for other funding opportunities: other FP7 calls, EUREKA or national funding. The EUREKA programme (www.Eureka.be) for international cooperation was explained and showed its possibilities for applied research funding.

An inspiring presentation by Francesco Jovane (ITIA and Manufuture) showed the benefit and needs for cooperation between science and industry. Only by coordination of efforts, efficiency can be achieved to the benefit of European industry.

Frits Feenstra will be the new person from TNO coordinating the RM platform, (replacing Anton Gerrits who gets a new job at TNO). He mentioned that the RM platform will incorporate progress and achievements from the four projects being funded by the EU (Directspare, Compolight, Stepup and Impala) in next meetings.

Two presentations were given to still our need for “talking technology”: Thierry Dormal from Sirris presented latest developments in metals RM followed by Phil Reeves (Econolyst) presentation on the low carbon footprint of RM. Thanks for both vivid and most relevant presentations!

The day was closed by a round table discussion addressing a.o. the input from local industry in the RM Platform, the possible formation of three RM application cluster groups (i.e. commodities, medical and industrial parts) within the platform and some other issues. The next meeting, the 6th RM Platform Stakeholders meeting, will be organized by the European Commission and is planned for June 2nd in Brussels, more details to follow soon.

News from 2nd stage of the FP7 RM call topic
The following projects proposals scored higher than the threshold during the 2 stage of the FP7 RM call topic NMP-2007-3.4-1.

The total requested EC grant is however higher than the available budget, so the negotiation phase will learn whether all projects can indeed be financed.

Acronym

Objectives

COMPOLIGHT

Develop new rapid manufacturing methods and solutions to improve the design of complex lightweight parts with internal channels or porous structures

STEPUP

Develop new systems, i.e. materials design and development, through the mechano-chemical modification, based on the high energy ball milling technology in polymers, for RM applications.

DirectSpare

Deliver spare parts on-demand in large industries using RM techniques, so reducing the need for large store houses, wasted spare parts and large inventories

IMPALA

Develop a rapid manufacturing process using a laser-based process to produce customized small and medium volume parts from powders.
